This year’s event will be the final one for Brandon Santa Parade organizer, Caroline Philips who announced her retirement after a quarter-century.
The news has left the future of the annual event up in the air.
“After 25 years and 24 years respectively, Caroline and Karlheinz are retiring from the Brandon Santa Parade,” the organizers shared via Facebook. “We have tried to find people to continue, but have had no luck. If no one is willing to step in and take it over, this year will be the last Santa Parade in Brandon. If you or any group is willing to take it over, we will provide guidelines and some assistance in orchestrating a smooth transition.”

The announcement, which Philips said was not easy decision, but an necessary one, prompted a flurry of comments from those for whom the Brandon Santa Parade has been a cherished event in the community for over two decades, bringing joy and holiday spirit to residents and visitors alike. To them, the potential loss of the tradition serves as a call to action.
Several people have expressed interest on Facebook in possibly taking over the parade including Michael Pickering, Betty MacDonald and Tracy Cartlidge.
Long-time participant in the parade Karen Hunt expressed her willingness on Facebook to support the next crew, emphasizing the dedication of the retiring organizers.
“I have been part of the parade for many years as the front parade pace setter,” Hunt stated. “The dedication that Karlheinz and Caroline have given is over and above! Last year, as sick as Caroline and hubby were, they were there organizing us. I’m willing to continue helping the next crew!”
Phillips said that the organizers are working on a date and place soon for a meet and greet information session at one of the community centres in Brandon.
The 2023 edition of the parade will take place on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
