Grocery workers approve contract
Approximately 3,500 Superstore workers in Manitoba represented by UFCW Local 832 have voted to ratify a contract with Loblaw, the union announced Sunday.
This approval comes after workers at Superstore, No Frills and Extra Foods — including those at Superstore in Brandon — voted in favour of strike action in September. A tentative agreement between the union and Loblaw was reached on Sept. 28, with voting taking place between Oct. 19 and 22.
In a release, the union said the contract represents the highest wage increases seen by members in 25 years. It added that the agreement included scheduling changes that should make it easier for part-time employees to work more hours and for all employees to enjoy a better work-life balance.
“We could not have achieved this contract without the strong strike vote and support that Superstore members gave to their co-workers on our bargaining committee,” union president Jeff Traeger said in a statement. “This bargaining committee worked long days and late nights to ensure we had significant improvements for all Superstore workers.”
The union’s next priority, it stated, is to negotiate a new contract for No Frills workers.
