Hey there, time traveller!

The new musical by Mecca Productions, “Something Rotten,” is really something special, says the theatre company’s artistic director.
“This is probably the funniest show we’ve ever done,” Lisa Vasconcelos told the Sun.
The production, which follows the tale of brothers Nigel and a jealous Nick Bottom, is Mecca’s 35th musical — an anniversary which deserves a celebratory show. The play will feature plenty of “easter eggs” or hidden surprises for both Shakespeare and Broadway aficionados alike.
But the production isn’t just for longtime theatregoers — it promises a lot of laughs for everyone, Vasconcelos said. The production, she said, will make for a great night out for a group of friends or a couple who want to do something together that will entertain them and get them laughing.
“This is a great choice,” she said, adding that supporting the local company will help ensure that they can keep putting on Broadway-quality shows at affordable prices.
It’s also a great opportunity for an outing without the kids, as the show is rated PG-13 for “colourful” language, Vasconcelos said. However, she noted, the kids will soon get to enjoy a show made for them by Mecca at the end of November.
Meanwhile, Vasconcelos hopes that many will come out to enjoy the show that has been a work in progress for quite some time. She said that after a number of cast members travelled to New York back in 2015 to see “Something Rotten” live, the company had been waiting anxiously for the rights to the play to become available.
But by the time they had the legal greenlight, the pandemic put a stop to efforts to put on the production. The 35th musical marker was finally an occasion for the special production to come together, as the planning for the show began three years ago with auditions.
Spectators can look forward to a dance show, which will be a unique feature to the production thanks to the work of three different choreographers. The company has gone all out on costumes and has rented projections from New York, so the set will look very different from any previous show.
“There really is just nothing like live theatre when you’re in the space with the actors, feeling the energy, hearing them sing and being nice and close,” Vasconcelos said.
Performances tonight, Friday and Saturday start at 7:30 p.m. while the Sunday performance is a 2 p.m. matinée.
Tickets are available at wmca.ca or in person at the auditorium’s box office and cost $32.50 for adults, $27.50 for seniors, $22.50 for students.
