Fatality in combine crash

A 55-year-old Roblin man was killed last week after the combine harvester he was driving slid down an embankment and rolled onto its roof into the water.

Russell RCMP say that the man was driving the combine south on Provincial Road 592 near Road 140 North in the RM of Riding Mountain West when it lost control on an icy downhill portion of the road.

A witness, who was also operating a combine in front of the victim, jumped into the icy water and pulled the man from the cab of the combine and gave medical assistance until emergency crews arrived. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Russell RCMP continue to investigate.

Ste Rose du Lac car chase and firearms

A 45-year-old man from Rorkerton is facing numerous driving and firearms charges after allegedly being involved in a car chase on Highway 276 just north of Ste Rose du Lac last week.

According to RCMP, on Nov. 4, officers responded to a report that a car was ramming into a pickup truck on the highway. Police located a pickup truck and a car travelling at high speeds and swerving over the highway. Both vehicles were significantly damaged.

The two vehicles were pulled over to the side of the road by police and the occupants of the car complied with police instructions to exit the car. However, the driver of the car, the 45-year-old from Rorkerton, would not let officers cuff him. An officer was injured during the process, but the man was eventually arrested.

Police found a firearm in each vehicle and their investigation determined that the driver of the pickup truck went to repossess the truck from a residence, where he was subsequently chased by the driver in the car. The car rammed into the pickup truck and the man continued to try to escape. RCMP confirmed that shots were fired at the truck.

The firearm inside the pickup truck was determined to belong to the driver of the car. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and was not charged.

The 45-year-old driver of the car is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, pointing firearm, discharge firearm, unsafe storage of firearm, and unauthorized possession of firearm.

RCMP say that their investigation continues.

Aggravated assault

A 39-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting another 39-year-old man and leaving him with severe injuries on Monday afternoon.

According to police, officers responded to a report of serious assault that had occurred in an apartment in the zero-hundred block of 10th Street.

The victim received serious injuries, including head injuries, and was transported to the hospital via ambulance.

The 39-year-old suspect – who was also wanted on outstanding charges of failing to comply with a release order, failing to attend court, and possession of property obtained by crime – was arrested near the scene. He is now facing additional charges of aggravated assault and failing to comply with a release order.
