Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School hosted more than 50 special guests on Nov. 10 to help students learn about not just past world wars, but the important job today’s soldiers do in Canada and around the world.
Soldiers from C Battery from the First Regiment Horse Artillery (1RCHA) bused out from Shilo to participate in the ceremony, with one of their own sharing a personal story to a packed gym of about 850 students and staff. The ceremony was about an hour and featured wreath laying by students, a performance from the Crocus Plains/École secondaire Neelin High School band (CPN) and a performance by the Crocus Plains choir with members of the Chamber Choir.
It was the first-time soldiers joined the Remembrance Day service at Crocus and Jen Emberly, one of three Crocus vice-principals, said the members of 1RCHA added more depth and meaning to the service for students. “I think it’s important so students can see the relevance to today still. So, they can still make connections. To honor our past and present soldiers,” Emberly said.
“We always hear about the big world wars, but there’s still conflicts going on today and peacekeeping, and we still have soldiers that are very involved …we need to honor our soldiers of the past and from the from the world wars, but we also need to understand that there’s ongoing protection for our freedoms.”
Members of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 82 Brandon and the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corp 2520, who were made up of Crocus students, formed a flag party. Led by Flight Sgt. Talan Kulczyck, they performed the honour guard ceremony.
Hayden Foster, a Grade 11 student, rounded out the ceremony with a reading “In Flanders Fields,” a poem by Dr. John McCrae. McCrae wrote the poem in 1915.
