A man is in critical condition at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg after being hit in the head with a hammer and left inside a burning home in Brandon on Monday afternoon.
A second man was also struck in the head with a hammer, although police say he only sustained minor injuries to the top of his head. Ryan Mecas, 32, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and arson with disregard for human life.
Around 1:15 p.m on Monday, police responded to a report of a man attacking people with a hammer in the 800 block of 15th Street. Witnesses on the scene provided a description to police and officers subsequently located the man a short distance away.
While on scene, 911 was alerted to a house fire on the same block.
Brandon Fire and Emergency Services went to the home and entered after witnesses said that the victim of a hammer attack was potentially still inside the house. Firefighters pulled a man out of the burning house, who had severe trauma to his head from multiple hammer strikes.
The man was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre before being airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.
According to police, the fire in the home was deliberately set using accelerants. A canister of accelerant and the framing hammer used during the assault were recovered by police at the scene.
Police say that the accused and victims were known to each other and that the victim was listed as being in “critical but stable” condition.
Mecas was remanded in custody and his matter will next appear in court on Nov. 16.
