Assaulting a peace officer
A 32-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly kicking and spitting on a BPS officer.
Police say they attended a business in the 1400 block of First Street North after receiving a report from staff that a woman was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave when requested.
During the encounter with the police, the woman allegedly kicked and spat on the arresting officer.
The officer was not injured, and the woman will appear in court on Jan. 22 on a charge of assaulting a peace officer.
Assault with a weapon
A 22-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting two women earlier this year.
In September, a woman attended BPS to report several accounts of violence by her spouse, including being threatened with a knife and being shot with a BB gun. Police identified another woman who said she had also been physically abused by the same suspect.
The 22-year-old man was arrested and will appear in court on Jan. 25 on charges of assault, assault with a weapon, and uttering threats.
Impaired driving
A 26-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday evening after allegedly driving impaired.
Police conducted a traffic stop with an unregistered vehicle near 18th Street and McGregor Avenue. Police say the driver was determined to be intoxicated by alcohol and will appear in court on Nov. 20 for charges of impaired driving and driving over .08.
Brandon journeyman wins award
A Brandon-based trades person has been recognized for this work by the provincial government.
R. Gerald Smith, from Chown Electric Ltd., picked up the award in Winnipeg from Apprenticeship Manitoba for “rural journey person of the year,” Wednesday night.
Smith was one of two journeymen to win the award. Sam Yoshida of Tenten Kitchen in Winnipeg won the “journey person of the year award” in the urban category. Chown is a family-run electrical company that has been operating in Brandon since 1978.
The annual event celebrates the outstanding contributions made by the province’s employers, journey persons and instructors while raising the public profile of apprenticeship and certification in the skilled trades in Manitoba. The event was the 17th annual Awards of Distinction, hosted by the Apprenticeship and Certification Board.
Other awards included the Apprenticeship Manitoba employer of the year – Bockstael Construction Ltd. (urban) and Paradise Landscape and Design (rural) – and instructor of the year – Guy Dowhy from Red River College Polytechnic.
