If dinner for breakfast or pottery is your thing, you’re in luck as the Great Big, Little Chili Bowl sale is happening at the Gala of Gifts this Saturday.
Starting at 10 a.m., the first 200 or so visitors to the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (AGSM) Gala of Gifts will be able to purchase, for $25, a ceramic bowl full of chili. But this is not just any bowl of chili. The bowls are beautiful, unique, handmade creations. Not one is the same.
“The nice thing about the Great Big, Little Chili Bowl sale is the bowls are made by the students,” said AGSM facility manager Kevin Conlin, who teaches pottery at the gallery. “Their work (that they keep) is precious to them, so they don’t push themselves. But when they get to play with somebody else’s stuff (the chili bowls), they push themselves. And when they push themselves, they discover the different things that can happen.”
Conlin said his students had been hard at work for weeks making the bowls, which will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Gala of Gifts also features nearly 20 other tables full of paintings, hand-drawn portraits, photography, bead work, jewelry and wool crafts. All artisans are from the Westman area.
“It’s always an exciting time of year when we get to do this event because it just gives us an opportunity to get people inside of the gallery, both in the wider community to show what we have available for them and the resources that are available to the community as a free public art gallery,” said George Phillips, AGSM’s gallery services co-ordinator. “It’s just it’s legitimately exciting to walk into the main gallery and just see wall-to-wall fine arts and crafts and local artisans doing their thing and to be able to see what our area has to offer.”
The Gala of Gifts is the AGSM’s 35th annual event and curator Lucie Lederhendler said it is as much about fostering community as it is about fundraising.
“We’re creating a real experience. The idea of the chili bowl sale isn’t just buying a handmade bowl, it’s about gathering over that food. It’s about creating a space where people are sharing in that way. There’s going to be live music and vendors — many of them are donating to a raffle,” Lederhendler said. “It’s very much about a reciprocal generosity between us and the community.”
Parents who want to shop the Gala of Gifts can drop off their kids at the children’s studio, which has been transformed into a free “Santa’s Workshop.” Kids can make a variety of holiday gifts with AGSM instructors and volunteers and enjoy hot chocolate, popcorn and holiday movies. Santa’s Workshop will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Gala of Gifts will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
