The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba hosted its 35th Gala of Gifts on Saturday in Downtown Brandon. The event, which is crucial for its fundraising endeavours, transformed the gallery into a hub showcasing an array of distinctive handmade gifts, live performances, and engaging activities.

Among the local artisans was AI Custom Printz co-owner Shane Keeping, who embraced the venture into AI-generated artistry about a year ago.

Speaking with the Sun, Keeping expressed his delight at the response received from patrons during the event, emphasizing the remarkable interest in his creations. “AI generative art keeps me intrigued; it’s about utilizing technology to metamorphose images into entirely novel creations,” he articulated.

Julie Hughes, the creative force behind Fluid Art, demonstrated her artistic prowess by explaining her innovative painting techniques.

“Each artwork has its own narrative. Experimenting with thin paints, layering, blowing, and spinning them results in these unique designs,” she told the Sun. “It’s a challenging yet rewarding journey.”

Attendees marvelled at her textured glass Christmas ornaments with baking soda and cocoa powder infusion, showcasing a blend of creativity and innovation.

Visitors like Sheila Ponto, enamoured by Hughes’ captivating pieces, expressed their admiration for the mesmerizing blend of colours. “The intertwining colours on the canvas are truly captivating and unique,” Ponto said.

MiKao Makery, represented by owners Mike and Kailey Coupland, shared their love for ceramics and the joy they find in working with clay. “It’s therapeutic and fulfilling. We started with a cheap pottery wheel for fun and fell in love with it,” Mike said.

When discussing their creations, Kailey highlighted their diverse pottery range, noting that their most cherished pieces are the ‘mug mug’ designs, characterized by quirky faces adorning the mugs.

Nicole Kiefer, renowned for her intricate wooden designs infused with resin, explained her artistic evolution.

She said her exploration began with discovering boxes and gradually delving into resin experiments, all within the realm of woodwork, adding that the positive feedback from visitors has been truly heartening.

She further contemplated the idea of introducing a donation box as a gesture of gratitude, considering the overwhelming support received.

AGSM’s gallery services, gift shop and event coordinator George Phillips explained that the Gala of Gifts offers a platform for local vendors and artisans to present their work to a wider audience. To him, it’s about amplifying the voices of local artists.

He added that the Gala also featured live classical music and Christmas melodies by Sherri Thom and Leslie Kewalchuk, adding a festive ambiance.

“The Santa Workshop provided free art workshops for children in watercolours, acrylic paintings, and ceramics, fostering an early appreciation for the arts,” Phillips told the Sun. “For 35 years, we’ve celebrated art, creativity, and community support. Despite challenges such as rising material costs, the Gala remains a cornerstone fundraiser supporting AGSM’s initiatives.”
