The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding an arrest last week in Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

The IIU said in a release Monday that members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service responded to an incident at 7:42 p.m. on Nov. 24, encountering an aggressive man.

That man sustained facial injuries in the encounter and was taken to Virden Health Centre in the aftermath.

The IIU’s civilian director, Zane Tessler, has determined an investigation is in the public interest.

Witnesses or people with information or video footage that could help investigators are asked to contact the IIU by calling 1-844-667-6060.
