Swan River RCMP make arrest in shooting investigation

Swan River RCMP arrested a 37-year-old Birch River man on Monday after seizing six firearms and ammunition from his home.

David Gabriel faces a charge of assult with a weapon and is also facing charges for numerous firearm-related offences.

On Nov. 25 around 9:30 p.m., Swan River RCMP responded to a report of shots fired at a home on First Street South.

Officers discovered the front door, front window, and wall had been damaged by gunfire.

No injuries were reported but the suspect had fled the scene before police arrived.

The investigation led police to execute a search warrant at a home on Lorne Avenue in Birch River, where they seized the firearms and a large quantity of ammunition.

Gabriel was arrested on scene and was remanded into custody.

Swan River RCMP continue to investigate.

Break and enter to garage

Brandon police are looking for more information about a break and enter to a garage on the 400 block of 14th Street early Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 6 a.m., police responded to a report of an alarm sounding from a home on 14th Street. Police say the suspect had forced their way into the garage and stole a bicycle.

Police searched the area and found the bicycle, which was discarded a short distance away.

The suspect was not located.

Theft of merchandise

A 25-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stealing merchandise from a business on the 1400 block of 18th Street.

Police say the security footage helped them to identify the man, who was located later that day.

He was also wanted on outstanding charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of property obtained by crime.

Organizations receive service review funds

Two Westman organizations are among the nine recipients of $1.46 million in total funding from the province for municipal service review projects.

The Municipal Service Delivery Improvement Program provides funding to service delivery reviews seeking to identify cost savings and streamlining operations for municipalities so they can improve services without needing to raise taxes.

The Neepawa and Area Planning District is receiving funding to review its legacy business processes and management systems while the Municipality of McCreary is getting resources to review its waste management and recycling operations.

“Municipal governments provide critical programs and services that meet their communities’ needs, and our government is committed to partnering with them to make life better for Manitobans across the province,” Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie was quoted as saying in a release.
