A Brandon-based rail company has been recognized by the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) for a safety program that is led by its employees.
Cando Rail and Terminals is one of the winners of the 2023 Safety and Environment Awards for its Good Catch campaign.
The Good Catch campaign acknowledges employees who are proactive in identifying and addressing safety hazards and near misses, and act on their own initiative to prevent an incident or accident.
Those employees’ efforts are recognized throughout the company and are consistently celebrated — and at times, are rewarded.
When employees are given the opportunity to contribute their ideas, experience and effort, the whole company benefits, said Cando president Brian Cornick.
“Identifying and reporting safety hazards has always been a part of working safely. What our Good Catch campaign adds is a systematic process that not only engages our people to proactively identify risks but also acknowledges them for their role in preventing incidents,” Cornick stated in a news release.
The program was started by field employees several years ago, when they realized there needed to be improvements in the way they reported hazards, said John Raymond, one of the team members of the Cando Safety Department.
The company changed its entire safety hazard reporting process, which improved safety overall, added Raymond, and created a culture of safety ownership from the ground up.
“Most importantly, our record demonstrates that our co-operative dedication to consistently addressing and correcting hazards brings a reduced incident rate while further establishing our fair and just culture in the workplace,” Raymond said in a news release.
Cando was founded in Brandon by Gord Peters and Rick Hammond in 1978.
The company now has nine terminals, more than 40 industrial railyards, one shortline railroad, and employs more than 900 people across North America.
In Manitoba, Cando employs about 200 people, with approximately half working in Brandon.
In the summer of 2022 Cando Rail and Terminals was purchased by the Alberta Investment Management Corporation.
Two years earlier, a business awards program called Canada’s Best Managed Companies named Cando as “best managed” for the fourth year in a row.
