Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 02/12/2023 (1015 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Jens Watt and Tom Friesen did their jobs on Friday night. Nothing flashy, just sound passing and smart, efficient attacking to the tune of a combined 27 kills and four errors.
That was the difference as the Brandon University Bobcats survived a 3-2 (16-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 23-21) marathon over the Fraser Valley Cascades at the Healthy Living Centre, improving to 7-4 in the Canada West men’s volleyball standings.
Brandonites Reece Wilson and Max Paddock and UFV fell to 4-7, with one match left before the semester break today at 6:45 p.m.
Paddock led an efficient and confusing offence that caused BU problems right off the bat. At times he set, but sometimes swapped spots with Jonas Van Huizen at left side. Ultimately, they fed the six-foot-nine Dutchman Nimo Benne for four kills and left side Caleb Kastelein for five to thoroughly dominate the first set. The Cascades had 16 kills and only two errors in the frame.
UFV fired a few too many attacks long in the second set as a much cleaner Brandon lineup made it pay.
BU rattled off four three-point runs to go ahead 16-6 as Tom Friesen took over.
Then as the Cascades tried to find a shred of positivity on offence, blocked three different attackers as the hosts tied the match with an even bigger blowout. The visitors had five kills and 10 errors while BU had seven and zero.
The teams finally found some balance in the third set. UFV went on a four-point run to lead 18-15 but Riley Grusing led an immediate BU charge to tie it 20-20. From there, Benne and Kastelein completely took over. Benne had two kills while Kastelein picked up a kill and a block on Grusing before Benne aced Kale Fisher to go ahead 2-1.
Watt scored four times early in the fourth as everything went BU’s way. It led 17-11 and maintained that edge the rest of the way.
Friesen unleashed a pair of bullets to cap a 4-0 run to start the fifth and Brandon stayed up 8-6 at the turn.
UFV tied it 10-10 but Paycen Warkentin hammered a kill in the middle, then back-to-back errors at the net put BU in the driver’s seat.
But UFV refused to go out, scrapping for every ball and pushing it to extra points.
A lot of extra points.
Both teams had plenty of chances to get it done before a Warkentin block set up match point and Ryan Hampe erred wide on a tip.
Brandon had a .321 hitting percentage on the night while UFV hit .188.
BU BASKETBALL: In Regina, the Bobcats women’s basketball team (0-9) lost 97-55 to the Cougars (4-3). In the men’s game, Regina (7-0) won 75-63 to drop Brandon to 7-2.
