Naughty children beware! The Krampus is in town this weekend and folklore lovers can actually get photographic evidence.

Keywest Photo partner Rob Lovatt and local costumer Marilyn Hardy have teamed up to offer a unique alternative to photos with Santa: Photos with the Krampus!

Handmade by Hardy, the Krampus is available to do a mini photo session at Keywest today and Sunday. Hardy will wear the costume herself and up to three children are allowed to take on the Krampus in the photos. Lovatt said he came up with the fun idea one day during a visit with friends and Hardy started describing the three Krampus costumes she had made.

“You know what happens when you’re sitting amongst people, and you start throwing out ideas and someone says, ‘Hey, we should do Krampus photos instead of Santa photos!’” Lovatt said. “I know, it’s not a huge following, and a lot of people scratch their heads and say, ‘Who’s Krampus?’ But it’s interesting and fun … I’ve always tried to do things that maybe other people aren’t, steer away from the pack a little bit whether it’s successful or not.”

The Krampus is a mythical creature, originated from Central and Eastern Europe. It is said to be a horned, tall creature, with big teeth and a frightening face. The old stories say the Krampus used to assist Santa Claus. On Dec. 6, Santa and the Krampus would visit children. If they were good, Santa left them gifts of oranges, dried fruit and chocolate. If the children had misbehaved, the Krampus would give them a good scare! In more graphic versions, the Krampus carries a basket on his back, where he stuffs the badly behaved children and saves them for eating later.

You may prefer Hardy’s Krampus at Keywest. She had made the Krampus costumes, just for fun, a few years ago. Now Hardy has volunteered to play the part of Krampus for Lovatt’s photo sessions.

“Marilyn very generously said, ‘Sure I can wear the costume.’ She’s more familiar with it, the application of it and how the energy of the character should be portrayed,” said Lovatt. Hardy and a couple of friends once wore the costumes out and about in town and even stopped for a drink in full Krampus gear.

Despite its origins, the Krampus remains a popular character in some cultures and has been featured in many books and movies in North America, including the 2015 Christmas horror movie, “Krampus.”

Keywest will be donating $10 from every session to the Assiniboine Theatre Company. You can sign up for a Krampus mini session on the Keywest Photo website or by calling 204-725-4949.
