SIXTY YEARS AGO
Three men from Camp Shilo and five from Rivers were recently awarded medals and decorations for long and efficient service in the Canadian Army. Receiving the Canadian Forces Decoration were Capt. G. N. Mastine and S. Sgt. R.P. Tod of Camp Shilo and Sgts. R.R. Heichert, D.W. Teed and C.J.O. Mooney and Cpl. A.M. Fisher of Rivers. Awarded the first clasp to the Canadian Forces Decoration were Sgt. R.J. Hart of Camp Shilo and Capt. F.R. de Denus of Rivers.
Maurice McAree of Elkhorn was elected president of the Royal Canadian Legion for the 1964 term.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
More than $1 million worth of Simmental cattle were sold in Regina at Agribition setting a world record for the greatest amount of money changing hands in a one-day, onebreed cattle sale. One hundred and fifteen head of the cattle of Switzerland sold for $1,241,725. The threatened strike by private radiologists in Manitoba has been called off.
Israel has accused Egypt of launching attacks at three points of the west bank of the Suez Canal, the latest in a series of shooting incidents since the Middle East ceasefire.
Rock band Bachman Turner Overdrive made the scene in Brandon last night at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium and gave approximately 400 people a taste of rock and roll.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
CN Rail and Kleyson Transport, one of Canada’s top 10 trucking companies, have forged an alliance. This will allow for the latest doublestacked container and handling technology.
National Hockey League referees and linesmen get back to blowing whistles and dropping pucks in six cities tonight as their 17-day strike is finally over. The agreement between the NHL Officials’ Association and the league calls for a 65 per cent raise over four years in which a first-year referee’s annual salary jumps to $65,000 from $50,000 this year and a first-year linesmen to $45,000 from $33,000.
Darcy Cockbill has resigned as town councillor in Virden so he can attempt to become mayor. A vacancy was created by the resignation of Glen McKinnon who was elected as the MP for Brandon-Souris in the October federal election.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Coun. Don Jessiman (Green Acres) is now the acting deputy mayor of the city, replacing Coun. Beth Smale (Meadows). Jessiman, who has served on council since 1995, will chair council meetings if Mayor Dave Burgess or the deputy mayor, Coun. Rick Chrest (University), are absent.
The ball is finally beginning to roll for Brandon First, an industry group attempting to bring sporting events and conventions to the city. The group, made up of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, the Keystone Centre and local hoteliers, works to draw group business, like sporting events and trade shows, to the city.
TEN YEARS AGO
The only footprints atop one of the most tortuous mountains in the world belong to a former Brandonite and his climbing partner.
Ian Welsted and world-renowned climber Raphael Slawinski were the first to climb to the virgin western summit of Pakistan’s K6 in June — and the feat has landed them a nomination for a prestigious National Geographic award.
A fiery car crash north of Los Angeles has killed 40-year-old Paul Walker, the star of the “Fast & Furious” movie series, and one other person in the vehicle.
