Chamber’s Ketchen named to premier’s jobs council

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew appointed Brandon Chamber of Commerce general manager Connor Ketchen as a member of the Premier’s Business and Jobs Council during his inaugural State of the Province address in Winnipeg on Thursday afternoon.

The council, Kinew said, was created to foster economic growth and job creation in the province, noting the importance of diverse perspectives in driving Manitoba’s economic agenda.

The chairs are Mondetta Clothing chief executive officer Ash Modha and Manitoba Federation of Labour president Kevin Rebeck. The secretary is Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation’s former stakeholder relations officer Pratik Modha. Aside from these executives, the council has 34 members.

Premier Kinew, in a letter to Ketchen, said he appreciated his commitment to serve on the council, pointing to its pivotal role in shaping Manitoba’s economic policies.

“Your task will be to provide action-oriented and practical advice on a wide range of issues impacting our economy,” Kinew said. “I recognize your significant achievements and the reputation you have built over the course of your career.”

Kinew said the council’s primary objective is to formulate an economic strategy tailored to Manitoba’s strengths as a diverse economy while identifying fresh avenues for growth in a low-carbon future. The assigned responsibility for members is to offer practical advice across various facets impacting the province’s economy.

The council will convene in its entirety as needed, initiating an inaugural meeting in the first quarter and establishing specialized task-oriented working groups aimed at tackling specific challenges and opportunities.

Expressing his honour and eagerness to contribute to the council, Ketchen said he is committed to advocating for Brandon’s interests within the organization.

“I’m enthusiastic about collaborating with the diverse group that will gather around the table,” Ketchen told the Sun. “Our collective aim is to propel our economic vision forward, specifically in terms of business growth, job creation, and the broader economic plan.”

“I am keen to advocate for Brandon and will undoubtedly rely on our executive, board, membership, and the city at large to ensure effective representation of Brandon’s interests within this esteemed council.”

He said his commitment lies in contributing diverse perspectives and guiding the province in formulating its economic oversight plan. “The forthcoming meetings will be crucial in determining the collaborative approach needed to provide insightful guidance and shared experiences.”
