Brandon University has a vision for an outdoor classroom and is hoping for some good ideas when tenders come in to convert an on-campus parking space.

The university has invited bidders to submit proposals for landscape design of the campus Quad area. The tender states, “a conceptual landscape design of the area is required to establish a vision for the area to function as a central gathering space and student hub, while maintaining space flexibility in terms of use and activity.”

BU president David Docherty said that, while the plan for an outdoor classroom is still in its infancy, the university has put out a tender and the deadline of Dec. 20 — this coming Wednesday — is quickly approaching. He said the tender will give the university an idea of what work and what cost is involved with converting the space.

“It is in keeping with the strategic plan about more public spaces and keeping with our campus master plan, which talks about green spaces,” Docherty said. “I think the Penn students who are here in the summer can use it, there’ll be classes that might plan to use it in September and in April.”

The university hopes to convert the parking lot adjacent to the courtyard in between buildings.

“This is a nice space. Right here we have the ceremonial fireplace, and we’ve got this nice quad. And then we have this parking lot. And the thought is, you know, if we can encourage people to park a little bit further away from this parking lot, we could use this space (for an outdoor classroom),” Docherty said.

Docherty said the university also hopes to use the space for alumni events, speakers and even outside groups could potentially book the outdoor classroom. He said he also likes that it is close to McMaster Hall and Harvest Hall, where students will be able to see the new space while they eat lunch.

While Docherty said they won’t know the potential costs until the proposals come in, it may be a project to help the university celebrate its 125th year.

“When we get the tenders, we’ll have a better sense of this is the something we can do for BU 125, or if this is a four- or five-year project that we look at,” Docherty said.
