The Pas received a $1-million Christmas present from the Manitoba government when it was given assurance of a $1-million technical vocational school.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Motor Vehicle Branch and the Motor Transport Board will be relocated in new offices in Brandon Dec. 24. The offices will move to the northwest area of the basement of the new Brandon Provincial Building at 340 Ninth St.
An agreement between the city and Eaton’s for a 200-car parkade in downtown is ready to be signed, but construction will not start until a report is completed on the central core area of the city.
FORTY YEARS AGO
About 150 temporary workers at McKenzie Steele Briggs Seeds have been laid off earlier than the usual layoff period at the end of January.
In Brandon, the overnight low was -35 C. Record lows were set in Bissett; where it was -40 C, and Portage la Prairie, where it registered -33 C. Winnipeg was -32 C and Churchill was the hot spot in the province at -26 C.

Up to 40 registered nurses from Brandon General Hospital could be laid off early next year as a result of a major staff restructuring, warns local New Democrat MLA Len Evans.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Westman placed sixth out of eight in Manitoba in terms of combined residential property tax and utility charges, according to a survey released by the Canadian Taxpayers Association. The 2003 Manitoba Property Tax and Utility Charges survey found Westman’s average combined charge was $4,777 in 2002. This year’s survey tracked the basic living cost for residential property owners across Manitoba. The lowest average provincially belonged to the Capital region at $4,035, while the Northern region had the highest average at $5,791.
Perth’s Dry Cleaners will buy up its competitor, Fred’s Dry Cleaners, and take over its space at 349 Ninth St. Perth’s will continue to use its existing location at 1215 Rosser Ave. as a shipping and production facility for its rentals division. The acquisition will mean Perth’s will employ more than 80 people.
TEN YEARS AGO
The fate of downtown Brandon’s vacant historic fire hall will be decided sometime in the new year. A request for proposals was posted in early August to the city’s website, about two months after city council rejected a grassroots attempt to start a co-operatively owned and operated brewpub in the space. Dec. 13 marked the deadline for proposals and in late January or early February a presentation and recommendation will be made to city council. According to the City of Brandon’s website, bids were received from Samson Engineering Inc. and Bowerbird Holdings Ltd.
New Democratic Party loyalist Bob Senff is expected to be named the party’s candidate for the Arthur-Virden constituency at a nomination meeting tonight in Virden. Senff, who has twice ran for the NDP in the past, was the only approved nominee, according to NDP provincial secretary Nanci Morrison.
