Theft of mail

A man and woman were charged after allegedly stealing mail packages Thursday afternoon.

Police received a report that someone had stolen mail packages containing a smartphone, tablet and a virtual reality gaming system. When officers responded to the area, they identified a 40-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman as suspects.

Police recovered the phone and tablet from the suspects, but the VR system was not found.

Both the man and woman were charged with theft of mail.

Drug alert for orange crystals

Safersites issued a warning about orange crystals sold as “down” in Brandon causing four poisonings.

The organization said a sample of the orange crystals tested positive for fentanyl and benzodiazepines.

Benzodiazepines are sedatives that are not opiods and do not respond to naloxone, which is used to reverse an opioid overdose.

Drugs with both fentanyl (an opioid) and benzodiazepines present a higher risk of a complex overdose, the organization said.

Permitting Escape

An 18-year-old woman is facing charges for allegedly letting a man out of a police cruiser after he was arrested on Thursday.

The man, along with an 18-year-old woman, had allegedly been jumping into traffic and was arrested by officers and placed in the back of a police cruiser.

While officers were distracted and talking to a witness, the woman allegedly opened the door of the cruiser to let the man escape.

He managed to flee a few steps, but the officers quickly took him back into custody. The man was lodged and released once sober, while the woman will appear in court on Feb. 27 on a charge of permitting escape.

Theft under $5,000

A 33-year-old man was charged after allegedly stealing a table-saw from a business on the 1000 block of 13th Street earlier this month.

Video surveillance helped police identify the man, who was located and arrested on Thursday. He will appear in court on March 7 on a charge of theft under $5,000.
