Air movements at the Brandon airport doubled for the month of November from 3,290 in 1972 to 7,377 in 1973, according to airport supervisor Robert Isleifson’s month-end report.

A Holstein in Washington state infected with mad cow disease might have come from Alberta about two years ago, U.S. federal investigators said. Just a day after predicting it would take weeks or even months to trace the diseased cow’s origin, Dr. Ron DeHaven, chief veterinarian for the U.S. Agriculture Department, said Canadian officials provided data showing it was one of 74 dairy cattle shipped from Alberta in August 2001.
TEN YEARS AGO
Two Brandon University researchers have received international attention for their recent work into how rural communities can better market themselves as tourist destinations. Geography Prof. Christopher Malcolm and Doug Ramsey, of the department of rural development, presented their findings to the sixth annual International Tourism Congress in Peniche, Portugal. Their study on the experiences of visitors to the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre in Morden was selected best paper at the conference. It will be published this spring in the prestigious academic publication European Journal of Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation.
Premier Greg Selinger called byelections Friday for Jan. 28 in the rural constituencies of Morris and Arthur-Virden. Both were previously held by Progressive Conservatives and are considered safe Tory seats.
The Western Hockey League’s Christmas break didn’t rob the Brandon Wheat Kings of any momentum. Rolling into their 12-day break with a 5-1-2-0 record in their last eight games, the Wheat Kings picked up right where they left off on Friday, scoring four times in the first period on their way to an 8-0 pasting of the Regina Pats at Westman Place.
