SIXTY YEARS AGO
Charles McEvoy and L.W. Skinner, who for many years have been members of COF Court, Alexander No. 366, were honoured when Chief Ranger H.C. McManes, D.J. Speers and Lloyd Gamley visited them in their respective homes in Brandon. They were presented with a 60-year button, an electric clock and a cake for the celebration.

Beginning Jan. 1, the Brandon Humane Society will not sell any animals at its shelter unless the purchaser pays in advance to have the animal spayed or neutered.
Two principal figures in the Watergate break-in, Howard Hunt and Bernard Baker, will be released from prison next week to await the outcome of their appeals.

Former Oak Lake farmer Roland Tolton’s accomplishments make him an obvious choice for the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in Toronto. A lifelong commitment to agriculture began for Tolton as a swine breeder, elite seed grower and cattle producer and continued throughout his career with the Meat Packers Council.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
It is no small achievement to dislodge a popular prime minister defended by the big cannons in cabinet and caucus. Paul Martin’s ability to do it with astonishing ease while actually increasing the Liberal party’s popular support has made him the Canadian Newsmaker of the Year in the annual survey of newspaper editors and broadcasters by The Canadian Press and Broadcast News.
TEN YEARS AGO
Aspiring fashion designer Ted Whetter has been named one of the top 25 finalists in the upcoming TÉLIO Canada Breakthrough Designers competition. Whetter, a former Brandonite, now lives in Toronto, where he attends George Brown College. The finalists were chosen out of a total of 531 student applicants from across the country.
With 2013 drawing to a close, farmers operating downstream from the Shellmouth dam and reservoir have yet to receive promised compensation for flooding in 2011 and 2012. Farmers in the upper Assiniboine River Valley near the Saskatchewan border have long argued that their land has been flooded periodically due to the operation of the dam.
Carberry’s Braden Calvert and his Winnipeg-based curling team is off to a solid start at the Canola junior men’s provincial curling championship in Portage la Prairie. Calvert is in a four-way tie for the lead in the Black Group at 2-0 after topping Portage’s Sean Davidson 7-3 and Brandon’s Tyler Grumpelt 7-3 during the opening day of the 16-team event on Friday.
