SIXTY YEARS AGO
Well-known CPR employee Clare M. Robinson retires this week after more than 36 years with the company.
Mrs. Jack Catto was installed as president of Yuletide Lodge No. 399 ladies auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen at a recent meeting held in the Orange Hall.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The 16-member contingent of the Brandon Optimist Track Club had a total of eight medals as the annual Knights of Columbus meeting in Saskatoon drew to a close. The Sundowners, coached by Brian Marshall, earned one gold, four silver and three bronze.
An increase in the federal minimum wage to $2.20 an hour from $1.90 effective April 1 was announced.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Completion of a project which had its beginnings more than 30 years ago will end in 1983 on a happy note as 87-year-old Mildred Donley had her book, “Pioneer Patches,” published earlier this week.
Westman Media Co-operative Ltd. has been asked to share its secrets for success at an international seminar on rural development in New Delhi, India.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Christmas Cheer total collected to date is $62,408.90.
The city’s third annual Christmas tree chipping for mulch compost program is on at the Keystone Centre.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Environment Canada reported about 10 centimetres of snow fell in Brandon this past weekend, including another five to 10 centimetres yesterday. An additional two centimetres of snow is expected to fall today.
In a city that prides itself on being affordable, the cost of getting services from the municipal government will go up next year in Brandon despite what it says on your property tax bill. While taxes will remain relatively the same, the price of water will go up by nine cents per 1,000 litres, the fourth increase to water rates since 2000. And in March, the city is proposing to charge a fee to all homeowners to cover the cost of picking up garbage and recycling from homeowners.
TEN YEARS AGO
A Brandon man’s death is being treated as suspicious by police after his body was found inside a Victoria Avenue home. Firefighters were called to a home on the 600 block of Victoria Avenue just past 1 a.m. on Saturday after smoke was reported. They were able to extinguish a small fire, but after that, a man’s body was found inside the home. Police have released few details about the death, but say they are treating the death as suspicious as they continue to investigate.
The Brandon School Division is handing out more suspensions than in previous years. For the 2012-13 school year, 327 students from kindergarten to Grade 12 were suspended, about 95 per cent of whom were from the three high schools — École secondaire Neelin High School, Vincent Massey and Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School. That’s a bit of a jump from last year, when there were 256 suspensions, but similar to 2008-09, when there were 325.
