SIXTY YEARS AGO

The Brandon Sun will move into a new home in 1964, the fourth premises it has occupied since first being established on Jan. 19, 1882. Purchase of the John Deere Building, built in 1947, at Fifth Street and Rosser Avenue by the Sun was announced today by L.D. Whitehead, president of Sun Publishing Co. Ltd.

Brandon’s first baby of 1964 was Mary Krauss, daughter of John and Margaret Krauss, who have just recently arrived from Germany.

Neighbours rushed in to help when a mother and her four young children were in danger of becoming trapped in a fire that filled their city home. The 3 p.m. fire at the home of Mrs. Kay Blowatt, 43 29th St. North, destroyed much of the basement.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Gov. Gen. Roland Michener bade a happy new year and farewell on Jan. 1 to hundreds of diplomats, military and RCMP personnel and the public. He will be succeeded by diplomat Jules Leger.

Angela Rose-Marie, born at 11:53, Jan. 1 at Brandon General Hospital, is the first New Year’s Baby of western Manitoba. Her proud parents are Ernest and Sharon Johnston of 420 Fourth St., Rivers.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Henry and Phillis Cairns of Oak Lake escaped their burning house yesterday morning by a safety rope that had been stored in their bedroom for more than 40 years.

Brandon General Hospital’s first baby of 1984, Gaeten Dionne, was born at 2:55 a.m. Sunday to Francine and Jules Dionne of CFB Shilo.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Brandon Wheat Kings captain Marty Murray from Lyleton is the 36th annual recipient of the Brandon Sun’s H.L. (Krug) Crawford Memorial Medal. Runners-up were: Melissa Habok, track and field; Bob Cornell, golf and hockey builder; Shane Moffatt, baseball; and Carmen Hurd, track and field. The team of the year award went to Maureen Bonar’s curling team of Lois Fowler, Allyson Bell, Rhonda Fowler and fifth Gerri Cooke.

Tracey McLeod, the 21-year-old member of the Brandon University Bobcats who overcame the tragic amputation of her right leg below the knee and become the first person in the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union to play basketball with a prosthesis, received a special recognition award from the Sun’s H.L. (Krug) Crawford Memorial Medal board of selectors.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon’s 2004 New Year’s Baby, Sarena Joy Waldner, was born yesterday to parents Tanya and Gerry Waldner of Elkhorn.

Brandon residents are digging a little deeper into their pockets to get services from their municipal government. Some of the rate increases include: homeowners will pay an extra nine cents for every 1,000 litres of water they consume; the student and senior cash fare for Brandon Transit goes from $1.50 to $2, while tickets go from $1.05 to $1.15; ride on handi-transit goes from $2.50 to $3; a 10-ride pass will now cost $30; an emergency trip to the Brandon Regional Health Centre goes from $220 to $242 for city residents; out-of-Brandon patients will pay $352, up from $320; licensing a spayed or neutered cat or dog will cost $15, up from $12.50; a public swim or skate at the Canada Games Sportsplex will cost $5.25, up $0.25, and a regular plot at the Brandon cemetery will cost $973, up from $927 last year.

TEN YEARS AGO

Police say someone stabbed a man to death and then set a fire to cover up the crime, and they’re looking for tips to help them solve the murder. The Brandon Police Service announced on Tuesday that Earl Daniel Beebe died from multiple stab wounds. Beebe’s body was found in his Victoria Avenue apartment early Saturday morning when firefighters were called there to deal with a small fire.

Neepawa’s Halli Krzyzaniak is the recipient of the Brandon Sun’s 2013 H.L. (Krug) Crawford Memorial Award, recognizing sporting excellence in Westman. The 2012-13 Brandon University Bobcats men’s volleyball team are the recipients of the Brandon Sun’s 2013 Mike Jones Team of the Year Award.
