Killarney RCMP have arrested a local man and three youths in connection with a rash of thefts and a break-in earlier this week.
During a 24-hour period between Jan. 2 and 3, Killarney RCMP received reports of stolen vehicles, a business break-in and numerous thefts from locked and unlocked vehicles in the town.
After responding to the crimes and gathering information, officers concluded “the same small group of individuals were involved in each of the thefts,” Killarney RCMP said in a media release issued Friday.
Investigators got a break while investigating the theft of a pickup truck from a local business. The suspects, they discovered, had used a stolen gas card at a gas station and had been captured on a surveillance camera.
On Jan. 4, officers arrested a 27-year-old Killarney man with assistance from the Manitoba West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST).
After executing a search warrant at the man’s residence, police recovered items that had been reported stolen.
Two stolen vehicles were later recovered and were being examined for evidence.
The 27-year-old man was released and is scheduled for court on March 16 in Killarney.
Three youth suspects were also identified and arrested — two males, aged 16 and 17, from the Rural Municipality of Prairie Lakes and a 16-year-old female from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
The three youths were released to their parents, but the two males will be required to appear in court at a later date.
In a statement, Sgt. Eric Descôteaux, detachment commander of the Turtle Mountain RCMP, credited members of the public for helping solve the case.
“The Killarney RCMP would like to thank the public for being diligent in reporting these incidents to police in a timely fashion, including the numerous tips,” Descôteaux said.
“With the continuous information being received, officers were able to confirm the identity of the suspects and recover the stolen property, which will hopefully put an end to these thefts.”
The investigation continues.
