Less than a week after getting a $10-million donation from an anonymous benefactor, Assiniboine Community College was on the receiving end of another gift on Wednesday, this time from the provincial and federal governments.

On the second day of Manitoba Ag Days, the governments announced that ACC is receiving $1.3 million through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership over the next five years to develop new production practices and protective system technologies for horticulture.

The announcement was made by Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn at an Ag Partnership breakfast hosted by the college.

“The next generation of producers are facing a future trying to balance climate change and environmental protection while ensuring that their operations remain viable,” Kostyshyn stated in a media release sent out on behalf of both governments.

“ACC’s applied research program will offer innovative ways in which producers can meet these challenges,” Kostyshyn said. “This funding will help ACC continue to solve the issues and challenges of the horticulture process, develop new products and technologies and improve business processes and grow their research program to meet the needs of the industry and community.”

Research projects in progress at the college include high tunnel crop production and passive greenhouse settings, which are both working toward allowing crops to be grown in Manitoba over a longer season, the media release said.

The college is also doing research relating to crops, including developing weather-resistant crops and collaborating with Indigenous communities in northern Manitoba to allow for year-round greenhouse farming.

“This funding to Assiniboine Community College will help ensure our farmers in Manitoba can continue to meet the growing global demand for our high-quality products, while strengthening food security right here at home,” federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay was quoted as saying.

Tim Hore, the dean of ACC’s Russ Edwards School of Agriculture and Environment, said government funding allows the college to expand its efforts in tackling food security and sustainability.

“We thank the Manitoba government and the government of Canada for supporting the research and industry collaboration that is so integral to the Edwards school, enhancing opportunities for students to gain real-world professional experiences through applied research projects and ensuring effective knowledge transfer and innovation for our communities, industry and partners,” Hore said in the release.
