SIXTY YEARS AGO

Ward Collyer and his Brandon foursome captured the Canadian Legion Branch No. 3 annual bonspiel over the weekend and received the President’s Trophy. Members of the winning rink are Ray Rogers, Jack Reekie and Les Wells.

At the inaugural meeting of the council of the Rural Municipality of North Norfolk, Reeve Frank Sims and councillors Percy Alderson, Jack Emerson and Leslie Fox were sworn into office.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The government-appointed Reg Forbes, principal of the Agricultural Extension Centre, took over from Doug Lawson yesterday as chairman of the Keystone Centre’s board of directors.

Citing the “distinct possibility of unlawful conduct on the part of one or more persons,” a federal judge has referred the case of the non-existent and damaged Watergate tapes to a grand jury.

The figure for the 1974 operation and maintenance costs for the 25 schools in Division No. 40 is $43,264.94. This represents a 7.3 per cent increase over the previous year.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba reported a $62,608 profit on three annual fairs it sponsored last year.

If a new program, Safe Grad, urging safe-graduation parties, succeeds in Manitoba high schools, much of the roar may soon be removed from the wild and woolly rite of passage.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

An owner of Bar-5 Simmental Stock Farms was honoured in Denver this weekend at the National Western Stock Show. Ron Nolan was named Canadian Man of the Year at the Colorado event. Nolan is the major owner of Bar-5, established near Douglas, which has the largest full-blooded Simmental herd in North America.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Sketch plans for renovating a school building to house the students arriving as soldiers begin to transfer from Winnipeg to Shilo this fall have received the green light. The division expects 184 kindergarten to Grade 8 students to arrive by the fall of 2005 as 700 members of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) transfer from Winnipeg to CFB Shilo. The Public Schools Finance Board approved the renovation project at O’Kelly School, the base school, which would cost the division $461,344. The building, undergoing renovations, is the Crear building on the Shilo base, which about a decade ago operated as a high school.

TEN YEARS AGO

After a devastating loss in last year’s Brandon-Souris byelection, Liberal Rolf Dinsdale made his first public appearances in Brandon this weekend. With the pandemonium of the hotly contested byelection now in his rearview mirror, Dinsdale has returned to the scene of his party’s monumental surge to lose the seat by just 391 votes. “Everyone was having — understandably — difficulty digesting that loss,” he said after he addressed a crowd of around 50 volunteers at the Riverbank Discovery Centre on Saturday for an appreciation event. The former Liberal candidate was also at a fundraiser for the Marquis Project on Friday evening.
