A 52-year-old man has been arrested for a serious assault in Waywayseecappo First Nation earlier this week that left a woman in critical condition at a Winnipeg hospital.

Derek Mecas of Waywayseecappo was charged with aggravated assault after he was arrested at the scene on Jan. 23.

Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers were called to a home in Waywayseecappo on Tuesday around 5 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from serious injuries to her upper body. She was initially transported by ambulance to Russell hospital, but due to her condition had to be taken to Neepawa hospital.
