The province is encouraging Manitobans to get outside and enjoy all that winter has to offer by allowing free entry to provincial parks for the entire month of February.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Tracy Schmidt said this month is a great time to enjoy Manitoba’s provincial parks. With affordability being top of mind for many families, not having to pay entry fees should mean more people can get out and enjoy the parks, Schmidt said Wednesday in a press release.

“We encourage all Manitobans to get outdoors and enjoy everything our beautiful provincial parks have to offer.”

Manitoba’s provincial parks contain trail systems that are groomed for cross-country skiing, fat biking, snowshoeing and hiking, the press release said. In Westman, these include Spruce Woods and Turtle Mountain, which also offer outdoor skating areas, hockey rinks and toboggan hills. The Asessippi Ski Resort in Asessippi Provincial Park, located 206 kilometres northwest of Brandon, offers downhill skiing and snowboarding experiences.

Park interpreters in Spruce Woods Provincial Park have numerous guided programs running that promote the stewardship of Manitoba’s park resources, Schmidt said. Some highlights for February include wolf howl hikes, snowshoe treks, ski clinics, quinzhee building and ice fishing.
