MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Presently the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is closed, but the Canteen Building is available for rent year-round, and you can shop the Tiger Moth Gift Shop by appointment by calling 204-727-2444. The museum will reopen on April 1, weather permitting. The museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial is open to the public from sunrise to sundown.

Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June). Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Our Second World War vehicle exhibit includes eight military vehicles used by Canadians during the Second World War. Military vehicles provided firepower, logistical support, mobility and protection for the Canadian Army, enhancing their effectiveness during the Second World War. Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art (2021 Victoria Ave. at Brandon University) — The Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art presents “Nostalgiacore,” an art exhibition with works by Brandon University’s fine arts faculty featuring: Lisa Wood, Kevin McKenzie, Lini Xu and Kevin Eichi deForest. The exhibition features paintings, ceramic sculptures, photography, drawings, sound installations and immersive installations. Hours: Thursdays to Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. until Feb. 18.

Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first, the AGSM boasts two art galleries, studios for youth and adult classes, a gift shop that supports more than 90 Manitoban artists and artisans. In the Community Gallery: “Young & Creative in Southwestern Manitoba,” until April 13. Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 204-554-0023.

Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The museum house was built in 1888 by James F. Frame, a hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. We are now closed for the season and will open again in the spring of 2024.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Feb. 8 — Brandon University will be hosting the movie “UnCharitable,” at the Evans Theatre at 5:30 p.m. This film has been sparking dialogue around the ways in which philanthropic giving is regulated, and exploring ways to unlock the power of the charitable sector. The event is free to attend, but does require an RSVP as seating is limited. Feb. 8 — City of Brandon Parks and Recreation Services presents a Love Disco roller skating at the Sportsplex arena from 7 to 9 p.m. Skate rentals are available courtesy of the Wheat City Roller Derby League. Pre-booking of the skates opens at noon. Limited quantity and sizes available and can be reserved for a maximum of 50 minutes. Cost: Adults $8; seniors and students $7; children $6. Feb. 8-10 — The Westman Multicultural Festival returns to Brandon featuring a total of six pavilions throughout the city: Mexico at the Brandon Shrine Club (1110 McTavish Ave. East); Ukraine at the Ukrainian National Home (1133 Stickney Ave.); Phillippines at Knox United Church (451 18th St.); Mauritius at the Westman Multicultural Centre (403 13th St.); India in the Imperial Ballroom at the Victoria Inn (3550 Victoria Ave.); El Salvador at the North End Community Centre (1313 Stickney Ave.). The kickoff ceremony on Feb. 8 will take place at the El Salvador pavilion.

Feb. 13 — The Brandon University of Music pro series presents Symphonic Serenade: A Celebration of Love, Faune and Nymphs at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at 7 p.m. featuring Daniel Tselyakov, piano; Sarah Hall, voice and Nancy Hennen, flute. All are welcome. Tickets are $20 and available at the door. No charge for Brandon University students, Conservatory of Music students and children under age 13.

Feb. 15 — The International Wine and Food Festival returns to the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Culinary arts students research and prepare more than 40 fabulous wine and food pairings from around the world for an evening of culinary delight. Feb. 22 — The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba’s annual President’s Dinner will be held at the ballroom at the Victoria Inn with recording artists Doc Walker. This annual gala is one of Brandon’s most prestigious formal evenings, developed in support of agriculture awareness. March 2-3 — Westman Communications Group will host Westman Gaming Expo in the Manitoba Room at the Keystone Centre at 9 a.m. Join us for a weekend filled with thrilling battles, strategic showdowns and non-stop gaming action! CK Sports Cards and I Want That Stuff will also have 60 plus tables of sports cards and memorabilia. March 16 — Sandy Lake is hosting their 10th annual Ice Fishing Derby at the new location at the end of the Golf Course Road. This is a catch and release only event. Fishing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entry fee of $40 per hole; $60 for two. Early bird select holes starting at 10 a.m.; all other select holes at 10:15 a.m. Storm date: March 23.
