CBSA makes arrest in silencer importation case
A Forrest, Man., resident is facing numerous Customs Act and Criminal Code charges after allegedly attempting to smuggle silencers into the country.
Curtis Waldner is facing Customs Act charges of false statements, smuggling prohibited devices and possession, disposal, selling or transfer of illegally imported goods. He is also facing charges under the Criminal Code for the importation of prohibited devices, unsafe storage and trafficking prohibited devices.
The charges were a result of an investigation conducted by the Canada Border Services Agency’s criminal investigations integrated firearms enforcement team in Winnipeg.
“The charges announced today by the CBSA’s criminal investigations section in Winnipeg reflect our commitment to keeping illegal firearms and firearms parts out of our communities,” Janalee Bell-Boychuk, CBSA regional director general for the Prairie region, said in a statement. “Our officers worked diligently to investigate these offences and we will continue to do our best to ensure those who break our laws are held accountable.”
Waldner’s matter appeared in Brandon federal court on Thursday and was remanded to March 14.
Dangerous weapon and theft arrest
A man was arrested after he was allegedly found with a six-inch machete on Wednesday.
Around 6:29 p.m., police were called to a business on the 1500 block of 18th Street for a report of a man who had allegedly stolen a hoodie and fled.
The incident was caught on video surveillance and police later located the accused.
When he was arrested, the machete was allegedly found on his person.
Mischief under $5,000
A 34-year-old man was arrested after allegedly causing damage to a building on the 600 block of 18th Street on Wednesday.
The man had allegedly damaged the business’s ceiling and video camera. He will appear in court on April 8.
