BRANDON UNIVERSITY
Brandon University will begin a celebration of Indigenous excellence this week with a series of events throughout February and March. First up is a talk by Manitoba Métis Federation minister Will Goodon about Indigenous identity theft from a Métis perspective. The talk will take place today at noon in the Gathering Space of the John E. Robbins Library. On Thursday, a celebration will take place in advance of Louis Riel Day, with fiddling and food at the Indigenous Peoples’ Centre at noon. Brandon University will be closed on Louis Riel Day on Monday, Feb. 19.
Rob Lovatt, professional photographer and partner/proprietor of Keywest Photo – image by design will give a Business Administration Speaker Series talk on Tuesday. Lovatt will talk about passion, longevity and resilience in a creative business, beginning at 12:40 p.m., in Room 206 of Clark Hall.

The first Pro Series concert of 2024 is coming up on Feb. 13, with “Symphonic Serenade: A Celebration of Love, Faune and Nymphs.”: Daniel Tselyakov, piano; Sarah Hall, voice; Nancy Hennen, flute, will provide an enchanting evening of musical romance, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Music will include Claude Debussy’s “L’après midi d’un faune,” Ravel’s “Daphnis and Chloe,” love songs by Poldwoski and more. Tickets are $20 for adults, and free for BU students, Conservatory of Music students and children under the age of 13.
This is the final week of Nostalgiacore, an exhibition featuring works by BU’s fine arts faculty. The exhibition will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art, from 1 to 4 p.m.
As part of Black History Month, a special guest presentation will take place on Thursday. Akech Mayuom and Sheika Henry will discuss Black mental health and Black excellence, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Mingling Area in the Students’ Union Centre. The event will also feature food and drink specials from Bailey’s and activities such as games, hopscotch and skip rope.
Francesca Kerton of Memorial University will talk about making polymers and materials from waste biomass and carbon dioxide in a Science Seminar Series event on Friday. The talk will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Room 4-47 of the Brodie Science Centre. It will also be available online. Email TeepleH@BrandonU.ca for more information.
Activist Bayard Rustin faces racism and homophobia as he changes the course of civil rights history by orchestrating the 1963 March on Washington in “Rustin,” showing this week at the Evans Theatre. Show times are at 7:30 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, and admission is $6.
The Bobcat volleyball teams are on the road this weekend as they conclude their regular season with matches at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. The futsal teams are also on the road this weekend, with matches in Winnipeg.
