The City of Brandon officially closed the outdoor skating oval for the season on Thursday, more than a month earlier than it did last year.

The early closure was due to “deteriorating ice conditions and recent warmer temperatures,” the city said in a news release.

It first opened for the winter on Dec. 22, 2023.

Flood lighting at the oval and the Manitoba Hydro Power Smart Waterfall of Lights have been turned off. Barricades have been placed to block entry to the oval and signs about the closure are set to be erected.

“While we understand that this may be disappointing news for many, the safety of our community members is our top priority,” the release stated. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back next season when the conditions are suitable for outdoor skating.”

By email, a city spokesperson said Brandon is not currently considering reopening the oval should colder temperatures return.

Last winter, the oval opened on Dec. 16, 2022 and closed on March 24, 2023.
