SIXTY YEARS AGO
A unanimous decision to proceed with the artificial ice project for the new rink in Reston was made at a special meeting of the Reston Curling Club.
Mayor S.A. Magnacca announced yesterday that the contract between the city and Haddin, Davis and Brown Co. Ltd., for the design, planning and consulting on the proposed sewage lagoon disposal system, has been signed. The $1.62-million system is being built east of Brandon.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Buffalo Sabres defenceman Tim Horton, 44, was killed early today when his sports car ran off Queen Elizabeth Way near St. Catharines, Ont., at more than 100 miles an hour.
The Manitoba Curling Association council announced last night that Brandon’s spacious Keystone Centre will be the site of the 1975 Consol playdowns in February.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The boundary lines of Riding Mountain National Park have been declared off limits to hunters after a fatal shooting by hunters last February.
While residents enjoy record-breaking February temperatures, Brandon’s public works department is busily bailing out the city. Public works superintendent Dave Wallace said this winter’s early thaw is clogging the sewer system, causing some flooding on city streets.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Two weeks after voting to close most stores on Sunday, Brandon city councillors have decided to let bars open on Good Friday. The move to permit the sale of liquor on April 1 — which falls during Royal Manitoba Winter Fair week — came in response to a request from the fair’s organizer and landlord.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Provincial Education Minister Peter Bjornson was in attendance at the official opening ceremony for Linden Lanes school’s new addition. The 1,440-square-metre addition is the second in the school’s 40-year history and adds a new gym, multi-purpose room, canteen and renovated classrooms.
TEN YEARS AGO
Jennifer Jones, with Kaitlyn Lawes at third, former Brandon resident Jill Officer at second and lead Dawn McEwen, who is married to former Brandonite Mike McEwen, defeated Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson 6-3 on Thursday to win gold at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Canada and the United States have waged plenty of pitched battles for women’s hockey supremacy over the last 25 years. But Canada’s 3-2 overtime win for a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal reached a new level of drama, even for these two combatants.
A damning study has left the future of a multi-purpose sports facility in Minnedosa up in the air. The 50-page study, which was commissioned by the Town of Minnedosa and released last month, examined the feasibility of constructing and operating the Minnedosa Regional Events Centre. The proposed facility would feature two sheets of ice, a fitness centre with meeting space, children’s play area, walking track and several dry floor amenities for local and regional uses.
