Hey there, time traveller!

The installation of a new ice surface on the Sportsplex grounds might not happen before the end of the skating season due to manufacturing delays.
At Tuesday’s Brandon City Council meeting, city manager Ron Bowles said the city is “running into some problems” acquiring the boards for the outdoor rink.
“Upon closing of the request for quotations in late December, the outdoor rink boards were ordered in early January of this year,” Bowles said, delivering an update on behalf of director of parks and recreation services Perry Roque.
“It was anticipated that upon completion of the manufacturing process, the product would arrive as early as a few weeks into February. Delays, however, in manufacturing meant that the boards were not completed until Feb. 9.”
They are now expected to arrive the week of March 11-16 and would need to be installed after that. With the weather potentially warming up, that means the outdoor rink might not be in operation this winter.
During the off-season, the boards will be stored at the city’s Parks Complex at 2020 McGregor Ave.
The representative for the neighbourhood the rink will be installed in and the person who pushed for its construction, Coun. Heather Karrouze (Ward 1), said while it wasn’t the news she was hoping for, it falls in the “better late than never” category.
Mayor Jeff Fawcett said the delay will allow Sportsplex staff to get a full understanding of the board system and have it properly installed in time for next winter.
Asked about the progress of repairs at the city’s Civic Services Complex, which suffered a natural gas explosion last year, Bowles said work is expected to start in the spring but due to the lead times on some materials, it may not be complete until late in the year.
The city and its insurer have yet to determine costs associated with the upgrades.
During budget deliberations earlier this month, it was said that there may be opportunities to upgrade and modernize certain elements of the complex that would be beyond the costs covered by the city’s insurance policies.
After council approved the appointments of Sylvia Barr and Areta Donnelly to two-year terms on the city’s age friendly committee, Coun. Greg Hildebrand (Ward 5) said one remaining vacancy on the committee still needs to be filled.
Council also voted to appoint Glenn Ball on an interim basis as a citizen representative on the Western Manitoba Regional Library board for the rest of 2024 and for Scott Ramsay to be appointed as the city’s weed inspector for the 2024 season.
