SIXTY YEARS AGO
The Kemnay Women’s Institute recently organized a 4-H club, with the help of the district home economist Norma Morrison of Brandon.
Wilfred Miko was elected president of the Manitoba Farmers’ Union at the recent meeting in Sandy Lake.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Mavis Curtis, who stole the show at the inaugural Knights of Columbus track and field meet at the Keystone Centre, also topped the polls in voting for the Sportsman of the Month of January.
FORTY YEARS AGO
About 20 cents of every dollar spent this year will go to paying off interest on the national debt, which will be about $151 billion as of March 31 and about $181 billion as of March 31, 1985.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Brandon’s average income took a nosedive in 1991, dropping four per cent to $18,248 from $19,052 and cancelling out much of earlier gain in average income from 1989. The large drop left Brandon residents trailing the average income of the province and many other Prairie cities. It also leaves Brandon trailing the national average by more than $6,000.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Brandon University’s student services are honouring staff members in a Wall of Honour celebration. The first recipients will be course adviser and counsellor Sherril Colert, Charlotte Kennedy, who designed the communications writing program, and dean of students Campbell Connor.
TEN YEARS AGO
After an audit of the Brandon Municipal Cemetery’s veterans section, two previously unmarked burials will receive headstones. The cemetery was awarded the headstones by the Last Post Fund Unmarked Grave program. In the spring, the graves of George Melvin Little, who died in 1991, and Gebhard Charles, who died in 2000, will now be marked.
Police say that a man found drunk while behind the wheel of a running car had a child with him. The possibly impaired driver was first reported in the early-morning hours of Friday, in the downtown area, and a witness was able to describe the vehicle as well as noting that there was a child in the back seat. Officers quickly found a vehicle matching that description parked in a downtown hotel’s parking lot, where it was running, with a man behind the wheel and a five-year-old child in the back seat.
