SIXTY YEARS AGO
The 18th Armoured Car Auxiliary in Minnedosa has announced it will disband after 20 years of service. The auxiliary held a final banquet Feb. 21, at which Mrs. Annie Brako of Dauphin was guest of honour as founder of the group.
The worthy student chosen as Teenager of the Week is 17-year-old Adrian De Hoog of Harrison High. Adrian is presently a Grade 12 student and participates in a wide scope of activities.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Both Safeway stores in Brandon are still on strike. In a comparison of current and proposed wages, clerks/cashiers current wages are at $2.30 (after 24 months, $3.08), proposed $3.91 (after 14 months); meat cutters $2.80 (after 36 months, $4.15), proposed $5.29 (after 27 months); doughman $4.37, proposed $5.35.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, saying “it is time for someone else to assume this challenge,” announced today he is stepping down as soon as the Liberals can elect a new leader.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Gerry MacKay guided his Brandon rink of Roy Gislason, Ed Davis and Al Smalley to a 9-5 victory over Garth Strachan of Hamiota to win the Manitoba Masters Curling Championship this weekend in Swan River.
Two U.S. F-16 fighter jets fired missiles to shoot down four Bosnian Serb planes that violated the United Nations’ no-fly zone over Bosnia today. NATO said the Serb planes apparently dropped bombs.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
While the idea was unthinkable a month ago, Brandon city councillors expect a quiet Monday meeting when they vote to approve their 2004 budget. After scrapping a proposed solid waste tax in favour of a 1.5 per cent property tax hike, councillors say their phones have stopped ringing as city residents seem more accepting of a marginal tax increase to a flat monthly charge for picking up garbage.
Killarney residents are “going with the flow,” Audrey Bellew says about the southwestern community’s response to this past week’s boil-water alert. “It’s like camping again. Welcome to the great outdoors, indoors,” says a chuckling Bellew, who doesn’t mind brushing her teeth with a glass of water. A malfunction was discovered in the Killarney drinking water reservoir late Wednesday, after the problem caused the reservoir to be pumped dry.
TEN YEARS AGO
A long-established skateboard shop which helped foster the sport in Brandon closed its doors this week, delivering a shock to the city’s boarding community. The co-owner of the now-closed Senate Skate & Snow, Jordan Ross, said there were a number of market factors conspiring against the business, but a 40 per cent hike in rent was the final blow for the Brandon store.
