Alfred Saunderson of Brandon was awarded a certificate of merit from Mayor S.A. Magnacca this week for the past 49 years as an active member of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
A Manitoba pool elevator burned to the ground in Russell today, resulting in what RCMP report to be a loss of between $500,000 and $750,000. The elevator contained 9,000 bushels of wheat plus other grains.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Sharon Carstairs, a 41-year-old teacher, was elected the new leader of the provincial Liberals in a four-person contest. Carstairs defeated Bill Ridgeway 307-238 on the first ballot.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Kidney Foundation held a fundraising casino at Houstons Country Roadhouse the last four Friday nights for kidney month.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Emergency services at the Brandon Regional Health Centre will be moving over to the new clinical services wing in April as the hospital renovates its old home. The renovations are expected to take between six to nine months.
Staff at the Brandon courthouse were left mopping up the basement holding cells yesterday after a sprinkler head broke off and flooded one of the cells. A courthouse official says it’s suspected two people in custody were involved with damaging the sprinkler.
TEN YEARS AGO
Brandon-Souris Conservative MP Larry Maguire won’t have to go through a nomination race leading into the 2015 election, according to party brass. In a decision made by the Conservative Party of Canada’s National Council earlier this week, no incumbent Conservative MP who captured a seat after the 2011 federal election will have to go through an open nomination meeting.
Less than a year after it was first launched, the City of Brandon has expanded its corporate scorecard so that it now tracks more than three dozen civic goals. City manager Scott Hildebrand said Tuesday that with the expansion, the public will be able to follow the progress of dozens of municipal statistics, from building permit turn-around time, website hits or calls for fire service, to more cumulative goals like annual movements at the Brandon Municipal Airport or annual tree pruning and removal.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford rejected suggestions on Tuesday that late-night TV comedian Jimmy Kimmel had humiliated him, and denied needing help for substance abuse. Speaking at city hall after his foray to Los Angeles, Ford brushed off Kimmel’s reruns of embarrassing videos and his suggestion the mayor find someone to talk to about his addictions.
