Bell MTS is eliminating customer service positions in Brandon and offering staff the opportunity to transfer to Winnipeg, a company spokesperson told the Sun by email on Monday.

“Bell is consolidating its Manitoba customer experience centres to one location in Winnipeg to facilitate better support for team members with increased infrastructure and leadership available on site,” said Morgan Shipley, a senior communications manager with Bell.

“Customer experience team members currently located in Brandon have the option to relocate to Winnipeg by this summer.”

Shipley did not specify how many employees will be affected by the move or if the decision would mean the closure of the company’s administration building at the southeast corner of 18th Street and Victoria Avenue.

Reached by email, a spokesperson for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 435, which represents some Bell MTS workers, said the majority of affected employees are represented by Unifor Local 7.

Unifor Local 7 did not respond to emails or phone calls requesting comment on the situation.

Bell’s move comes after the telecommunications company announced last month it would be eliminating 4,800 jobs and selling 45 of its 103 radio stations across Canada. Bounce 96.1 and Pure Country 101 in Brandon were not among the stations being sold.

According to the website of the Winnipeg Architectural Foundation, the Bell MTS building in Brandon was designed by architectural firm Duncan Rattray Peters Searle and first opened in 1967.

The Tyndall Stone-clad building was originally only a single storey, but was expanded in 1973-74 to create room for equipment facilitating direct long-distance phone calls.
