Brandon University is gearing up for a significant transformation of its science facilities, with plans to extensively renovate the Brodie Science Centre and add a six-storey research annex building.
The ambitious project is estimated to cost between $55 and $75 million, according to the request-for-proposal document dated March 7.
University spokesperson Rob Henderson said the estimate might not accurately reflect the current economic landscape or potential fluctuations in construction costs.
“Renovating and potentially expanding the science building is a priority for BU,” he told the Sun in an email. “We’re actively developing plans for what that might look like. The cost estimates you’re looking at reflect a pre-pandemic assessment of one possible approach to the renovation.”
Henderson could not provide details on the planned renovation or the construction timeline.
“I don’t have anything to share now,” he said.
The planned renovation addresses concerns raised by faculty members, such as Bernadette Ardelli, who advocated for improvements in September 2015.
Ardelli, a BU professor for nearly eight years, highlighted the challenges posed by cramped lecture halls and outdated lab equipment at the Brodie Science Centre.
“For science especially, we need equipment, we need modern labs, the students … they need to be in a comfortable environment where they can use modern technology,” Ardelli said during an interview with the Sun in 2015.
Ardelli’s efforts to draw attention to the outdated facilities included inviting various administrators, including former BU president Gervan Fearon, to experience the state of the building from a student’s perspective.
