Shoppers in Brandon were welcomed to the newly refurbished Sobeys Brandon West at 3409 Victoria Ave. on Thursday morning after a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the end of an eight-month-long renovation project.

Franchisee/manager Greg Gingras said the upgraded store includes a host of new additions and improvements to enhance customers’ shopping experience.

“Significant investment and efforts that went into transforming the store saw everything from cart corrals to the back of the store being renovated, replaced or upgraded,” he told the Sun.

“We started in the summer and proceeded for eight months.”

He did not disclose the cost of the project.

Among the notable changes introduced, Gingras listed the addition of new full-service meat and seafood departments and a refreshed bakery. As well, “significant upgrades were made to the produce equipment and hot tech kitchen offerings.”

Gingras assured customers that despite the renovations, the store’s size remains unchanged, allowing it to accommodate the same number of shoppers.

He expressed optimism about the store’s new look and improvements.

“We hope to see a lot more traffic and exceed our customers’ expectations.”

He acknowledged the help received from Sobeys, saying the company provided “lots of support in terms of direction and people coming to assist for each department because it’s a large company and they support us.”

Reflecting on the history of the store, Gingras cited its long-standing presence in Brandon, tracing back 53 years. Originally established as a local mart in 1971 in the K-Mart Plaza, the store underwent several transformations, evolving from IGA to IGA Garden Market before finally becoming a Sobeys full-service store, with a recent expansion doubling its size.

Gingras encouraged the community to visit the renovated Sobeys Brandon West and experience the changes firsthand.

“I just think everybody should give us a look. See, check it out and see what you think,” Gingras said.
