As it celebrates 50 years in Brandon, the Keystone Centre is hosting a free outdoor family-friendly concert in June, featuring homegrown Manitoba talent.
The evening’s entertainment is scheduled for June 15, with the first of three acts hitting the stage at 6 p.m. in the grassed area on the east side of the Keystone grounds along 13th Street.
Renovations have already begun on the permanent outdoor stage, including upgrading the electrical requirements and touching up the concrete, said Jared McKenzie, Keystone’s director of marketing and ticketing.
“On the day of the show, we’ll have bleachers set up, but we’re encouraging people to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and just enjoy the space under the sun, under the trees, while taking in the show,” McKenzie said.
All three entertainers — Begonia, Boy Golden and FONTINE — are from Manitoba, added McKenzie, who said he’s excited about bringing them to the Brandon audience.
“We wanted to get acts that had that wide appeal, and super easy to listen to,” he said.
“And Begonia, Boy Golden and FONTINE, as far as I’m concerned, are three of the absolute and foremost acts that have come out of Manitoba in the last five to 10 years.”
Begonia’s music is a blend of pop, rhythm and blues and soul. She is from Winnipeg and is a two-time Juno award nominee.
Boy Golden grew up in Brandon and has performed his country-folk style at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, held a sellout show at the Burton Cummings Theatre and recently toured across the country with the Sheepdogs.
FONTINE, an Indigenous indie-folk/pop artist, has roots in Brandon and was also part of the Sheepdogs’ tour.
While the entertainment is scheduled for the evening, McKenzie said staff are working on “things for people to do” throughout the day.
So far, a classic car show has been confirmed, and there will be food and drink vendors on site.
“It’s all hands on deck,” McKenzie said. “So, we’re working on a couple of other things to kind of round out the day and have a little bit of something for everybody.”
