A woman was rushed to hospital in the early morning hours of Saturday after she fell from the third floor of a burning building on 15th Street.

At 1:34 a.m. on Saturday, police, fire and emergency services were called to a fire at a house in the 300 block of 15th Street, a press release posted on the City of Brandon’s website by the Brandon Police Service said.

The fire is believed to have started on the third floor of the building, which has been divided into suites. It was put out soon after firefighters arrived. A 26-year-old woman was taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the fall. BPS Staff Sgt. Kirby Sararas told the Sun it remains unclear whether the woman fell or jumped, and the extent of her injuries is unknown.

Early Sunday afternoon, a building tenant who lives below the third floor told the Sun that her son had woken up to a loud thud around 1:15 a.m. that morning. He looked outside on the lawn and saw the woman sprawled on the ground. Once emergency services and police showed up, the family had to leave their suite while fire crews put out the fire. The tenant said the woman, who lived on the third floor and was taken to hospital, lived alone.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A reporter from the Sun contacted the fire department, and a representative said no additional information was available at that time. The only damage visible from outside the home on Sunday afternoon appeared to be smoke damage done to a third-floor window at the front of the building.
