Sidney Poitier won the best actor Oscar at the Motion Picture Academy Awards ceremonies for his role in “Lilies of the Field.” Patricia Neal won best actress for “Hud” and “Tom Jones” won for best picture.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
A cornerstone laid in 1924 in memory of a prominent Brandonite and former alderman David Crystal was removed yesterday from the Jewish synagogue at Fourth Street and Princess Avenue. The synagogue is to be torn down to make way for a senior citizens housing project of the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corp.
FORTY YEARS AGO
“Terms of Endearment” won the lion’s share of major awards at the 56th annual Academy Awards ceremony last night including best picture and director. Shirley MacLaine also won for best actress for her role in the movie. Best actor award went to Robert Duvall in “Tender Mercies.”
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Queen’s Baton has arrived in Canada for the first Canadian leg of its journey to the Commonwealth Games in Victoria Aug. 18. Gov. Gen. Ray Hnatyshyn received the ornate silver baton and passed it on to Canadian aboriginal runner Angela Chalmers, a former Brandonite and winner of two Commonwealth gold medals and a bronze at the Barcelona Olympics.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The Westman Recycling Council will celebrate its first anniversary of the blue bag program and the opening of the new recycling facility on April 28. The $4-million facility was built with funding from the Canada Manitoba Infrastructure program and the City of Brandon.
TEN YEARS AGO
Colliers International is hoping to breathe some new life into the former Zellers department store in the city’s west end. The real estate company is working with Winnipeg-based Landstar Development, the new owners of the vacant retail space at the corner of Victoria Avenue and 34th Street.
Brandon travellers hoping for a WestJet Encore route from Brandon to Thunder Bay or Toronto will just have to keep their fingers crossed. The airline announced that as of June 27, its first eastern service will be launched, but it will be Winnipeg-Thunder Bay-Toronto.
A teen who sold drugs at school to support his own drug habit has been sentenced to probation. Court heard that the student was arrested at the office of Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School on Dec. 19. A vice-principal informed police that the boy had been caught with ecstasy, and a baggie that held 23 pills was handed over to police.
