Slark named finalist for CAJ award
Brandon Sun reporter Colin Slark has been named a finalist in the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) annual awards competition.
Slark is nominated in the Community Written Feature category for his Dec. 23 Christmas feature, “One priest, two churches, three denominations, four congregations.”
Presented as a Westman version of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi,” the story describes how a set of churches in Brandon and Souris came together “to share what they possessed to make up for what the others did not.”
Other publications included among the finalists in the category are The Hamilton Spectator, Las Converse (Montreal), The Discourse Nanaimo and The Eastern Door (Kahnawake, Que.).
Winners will be announced at the CAJ awards gala in Toronto on June 1.
Pizza delivery driver assaulted
Brandon police arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a pizza delivery driver on Monday afternoon.
Around 4 p.m., the driver brought an order to a home on the 1100 block of Ninth Street. Police say a child answering the door tried to pay, but the driver informed him he was not able to provide enough change.
After that, the man is alleged to have yelled at the driver, pushing and spitting at him.
When the driver went back to his vehicle, the suspect is said to have left the home not wearing either a shirt or shoes, opened the door of the car and allegedly took both the pizza and the debit machine.
Police arrested the man, charging hm with assault and theft. He also had two outstanding warrants for assault and failing to attend court.
He was due to appear in court on Tuesday.

The victim said that after refusing to let the suspect use her phone, the suspect threw her to the ground and assaulted her.
The suspect was due to appear in court on Tuesday.
