IIU investigating fatal shooting in Sandy Bay

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot and killed in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation on Saturday.

According to a press release from the Independent Investigation Unit, Manitoba First Nations Police and the RCMP responded to a call for service at a residence on Ridge Road South in Sandy Bay for a report of a man who had a weapon and was threatening a woman.

When police arrived, the man was no longer at the home. Officers searched for the man and located him a distance away from the home. A “use of force encounter” occurred, and an RCMP officer shot his firearm.

The man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

In an RCMP press release on the same incident, Mounties said the 27-year-old man was armed with multiple weapons and that life-saving measures were attempted by officers on scene.

No officers were injured in the incident, and Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services are currently in the community investigating.

The IIU is asking for any witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist its investigation to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
