SIXTY YEARS AGO
Monday closing was approved in Pipestone at a meeting of the chamber of commerce. Effective May 4, stores will be closed all day Monday and remain open all day Thursday.
A new organization, the Brandon Natural Historical Club, was formed recently at a meeting held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Lane.
A Melita man was named “flying farmer of the year” at the annual convention of the Manitoba Flying Farmers Association. Cliff Reddeway received the Maple Leaf Aviation trophy from Jim Wall of the Brandon office of Cessna.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
There was mail delivery in Brandon today as reports from Ottawa say the postal unions have accepted a set of proposals that could end widespread wildcat mail strikes across the nation.
Assiniboine Community College will start a licensed practical nursing training program, Brandon East NDP MLA Len Evans announced.
Provincial government leaders and Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau have pledged financial assistance to help repair widespread flood damage on the Prairies. With the exception of the Red River area in Manitoba, where heavy rains brought a drastic upward revision in expected water levels, the floods in most areas appeared to have stabilized.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon school board threw down the gauntlet on French immersion yesterday. The board defied the Public Schools Act and defeated a motion to establish a kindergarten immersion program at New Era School this September.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Sales of cigarettes jumped dramatically in March, sparking another round of accusations about the Feb. 8 decision to roll back tobacco taxes.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The debate inside Ottawa these days is whether the federal government can pay for two separate projects at the Keystone Centre, cabinet minister Rey Pagtakhan says. The minister for Western Economic Diversification, visiting Brandon yesterday, says federal officials are doing their due diligence by reviewing funding applications for both an $8-million set of barns and a $4-million national curling hall of fame on the Keystone grounds. He recognizes both projects are time-sensitive and says an announcement could come soon.
TEN YEARS AGO
It’s not at the top, but Brandon motorists have once again put Victoria Avenue on the list of the province’s worst roads. Victoria Avenue came in at No. 8 this year in the annual poll by CAA Manitoba. It topped the list last year.
Critical infrastructure in Manitoba’s oilpatch will see millions of dollars in road repairs and upgrades, Premier Greg Selinger announced yesterday. During the premier’s State of the Province address at the Keystone Centre, Selinger said $29 million will be injected into the road network in the southwestern portion of the province — beginning this year.
