FIFTY YEARS AGO

Mayor Bill Wilton has expressed disappointment over a decision of H.D. Lee Co. of Shawnee Mission, Kan., to bypass Brandon and locate its new Canadian plant at North Bay, Ont.

Dr. E.J. Tyler, professor of psychology at Brandon University, has won the Clifford J. Robson Distinguished Psychologist in Manitoba Award for outstanding services to psychology in the province.

FORTY YEARS AGO

A meeting is planned today in Ottawa between Indian Affairs Minister John Munro and three of four Manitoba chiefs whose bands have pulled their children out of reserve schools to protest a lack of funding.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

MTS employees were in shock this morning after the Crown corporation announced it was laying off 200 people because workers refused to voluntarily accept days off without pay.

A tree-planting ceremony was held at city hall this morning to mark the Year of the Family. Eight thousand seedlings are being made available free to the public at several Brandon locations.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The City of Brandon’s 53 firefighters and 30 bus drivers all have a new contract. City council approved a three-year deal for the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 and a 30-month collective agreement with the International Association of Firefighters Local 803.

TEN YEARS AGO

Manitoba Health found more than 350 violations in Brandon restaurants and cafeterias last year and has convicted five food establishments since May 2013. About 75 locations were cited by Manitoba’s health protection unit, according to data provided to the Brandon Sun by Manitoba Health. The most common issues related to hand-washing, the use of appropriate cleaning products, dirty kitchen floors, dirty fridges and freezers and food not properly labelled, covered or stored.

Manitoba Liberals will focus on election readiness as the party holds its annual general meeting in Winnipeg this weekend. In an interview, provincial Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari played down recent reports of internal bickering within the party, saying the number of disgruntled members is “very, very small.”

After 26 years of rolling, kneading, beating and glazing, Sharon Alexander is ready to hang up her apron. Sweet Temptations bakery went up for sale in March and while it is still business as usual, Alexander says it’s just time, after all these years, to move on.
