The City of Brandon has issued a tender for underground work that, once completed, will allow the province to upgrade 18th Street.
Earlier this year, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor told the Sun that her department would be repaving the pothole-ridden street once Brandon completes some work beneath the road.
A government spokesperson told the Sun on Monday that if the July 31 deadline set by the city holds, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure should be able to get their work done this calendar year depending on factors like weather.
The city’s work comprises three sections: the replacement of a watermain along 18th Street between Park and College avenues, the replacement of another watermain near the intersection of 18th Street and Aberdeen Avenue and repairs to sewers along 18th Street near the northern and southern ends of the Keystone Centre grounds as well as at the intersection with Lorne Avenue next to Brandon University.
Because some water valves will be closed during the work, several addresses along 18th Street and Park Avenue, as well as Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop, GoodLife Fitness and Dollarama at Shoppers Mall, will be provided with temporary water service from another source.
When sewers are temporarily closed during the work, the contractor is expected to keep waste moving through temporary pumping measures.
Throughout the work, the document specifies that the contractor must maintain at least one open lane of traffic in each direction on 18th Street.
If any road closures are required, the city must be notified 48 hours in advance so it can warn emergency services, Brandon Transit, city staff and residents.
The tender documents also include inspection reports with pictures for the existing watermains.
While some sections only feature some deposits of foreign material or corrosion damage, other sections have numerous cracks, fractures, stains and holes.
Bids for the tender close on May 28 at 2 p.m. The winning contractor is expected to have the work completed by July 31.
