Many cottage owners believe that Pelican Lake has reached the highest level in recent history. For the first time, a number of low-lying cottages have been flooded by high water and the worst may be yet to come.
The City of Brandon was presented with a certificate last night from the Workmen’s Compensation Board because its employees have worked 250,000 man-hours without a lost-time injury.
Brandon nurseryman Dick Patmore was honoured last night at city council with the presentation of a pen set from the parks boards and cuff links from the city for 23 years of service to the board.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Former Saskatchewan Energy Minister Colin Thatcher and his lawyer were committed yesterday to stand trial on a charge of mischief in the abduction of Thatcher’s daughter when she was taken from the home of a friend last winter.
A tentative settlement was reportedly reached today between seven American chemical companies and 15,000 Vietnam War veterans in a mammoth lawsuit in which the American, Australian and New Zealand veterans sought to prove injuries from exposure to the defoliant Agent Orange.

Const. Gay Jones has been named the winner of the police service’s Vivian Cruise Memorial Award for her outstanding volunteer work with the air cadets program over the years.
CTV sportscaster Rod Black gave a keynote address at the 20th annual Mosaic Massey conference. The theme of this year’s conference, put on annually by Vincent Massey High School, is media literacy.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A fundraising drive to buy more than 200 new beds for the Brandon Regional Health Centre is more than halfway to its goal. Donors have contributed $709,000 for the new beds, said Janice Meadows, manager of the Brandon Regional Health Care Foundation. The foundation needs to raise a total of $1.3 million for the beds, which cost about $5,300 each.
