Westman Communications Group has acquired Rionet wireless and fibre networks in a move aimed to expand WCG’s operations in the Parkland region, the companies jointly announced on Thursday.

Rionet, a Dauphin-based communications company, was established in 2009 by a few local individuals seeking reliable internet services.

WCG president Bud Keys said the collaboration would aid the completion of the planned fibre builds for Dauphin Beach and adjacent communities.

“We have been proud partners with Rionet for over 14 years, working together to provide the best services to his customers,” Keys said. “Adding Rionet wireless and fibre networks to our portfolio was a natural progression for WCG, reflecting our shared commitment to quality and reliability.”

A business born out of necessity, Rionet has been working for 15 years to improve wireless services and connectivity in rural Manitoba, he said.

WCG is excited to maintain the long-standing relationship with Rionet, Keys said, adding the company looks forward to collaborating on future construction projects to better serve customers.

“Acquiring Rionet wireless and fibre networks reflects the WCG co-operative’s focus on providing and future-proofing advanced communication services and enabling a better ‘digital quality of life’ for residents and businesses outside major urban centres,” Keys added.

WCG marketing manager Brandi Crowe said the acquisition would significantly enhance the quality of the services accessed by residents and businesses in rural Manitoba.

“We plan to introduce higher internet speed options and improve reliability with our resilient network,” Crowe told the Sun in an email. “In alignment with our shared commitment to quality service, Rionet and WCG have been collaborating closely to enhance communication services. This collaboration will ensure that residents and businesses in rural Manitoba receive top-notch services that meet their evolving needs.”

Regarding the impact on jobs, Crowe said: “We anticipate adding incremental staff to support the fixed wireless network. Our goal is to strengthen our workforce to better serve the community’s needs. We plan to integrate Rionet into the WCG brand in the coming months.”

Rionet owner Jarett Robak said his company has strived to offer quality internet to the communities of Grandview, Gilbert Plains, Dauphin and nearby regions.

“We are very excited that WCG, a co-operative with a strong community focus, will continue to advance these services,” Robak said. “Our team looks forward to supporting WCG’s mission to expand and improve services across the Parkland region. A big thank you to all our customers for their support over the years.”
